You may be well-versed in data science tools and techniques, yet still not appeal to various employers. If you want to increase your chances in interviews, perhaps the following 7 steps could help:
-
Learn to Understand That There Are Different Roles
The data science ecosystem encompasses a variety of roles such as Data Engineer, Data Scientist, Business Analyst, Data Analyst, Data Visualizer (the Storyteller), Statistician, Data Science Manager, Data Architect, Machine Learning Engineer, Computer Vision Engineer, and more. Find out what each of these roles entails and, importantly, which one interests you the most. Some roles require more technical knowledge, and you must be a Python guru, while others are more about strong communication skills. -
Prepare for the Interview – You Must Be Digitally Visible
Over 80% of people you will interview with will start to look you up online. Typically, the first place they check is LinkedIn. Having a polished CV on LinkedIn is essential. Additionally, increase your visibility by creating a GitHub account so that potential employers can see your original, clever, and well-documented code. Show that you are an expert by answering questions on Quora. Publish your results on a blog. Attend various conferences, ideally as a speaker. This cannot be done at the last minute before the interview. Start to make yourself visible at least six months in advance. -
Prepare a Great CV and Send It Out into the World
If you don’t feel like an expert, consult someone who conducts interviews and has seen a number of CVs. After interviewing several hundred people myself, I now look at my own CV quite differently. -
Initial Phone Screening
At this stage, try to understand the role being offered, the company, and your place within it. It is quite foolish to ask about holidays and meal vouchers at this point. The people on the other end need to feel your passion for the field, your preparedness, and a friendly personality that everyone wants to work with. -
Completing a Practical Task
If you made a good impression during the phone interview, you may receive a task designed to verify that the skills you describe in your CV are indeed yours. Don’t hesitate to be proactive here. Were you tasked with building a model? Include a nice report on how you accomplished it. -
In-Person Interview
The same principles apply as in the initial phone screening. -
Post-Interview Steps
The interview doesn’t end there. Show that you are professionals, and if you promised to send or do something during the interview, don’t forget it. Thank them for the interview, even if you weren’t selected. The world of IT and data science is small.
