Recently, editor Jana Divinová from Forbes approached me with a very timely question: How to avoid being replaced by artificial intelligence in the next 5 years? 🤖 Here’s a summary of my responses that might be useful for your own career:
- What skills should you start building today?
In the near future, it will be less important to create texts or code from scratch. The key will be to become a "chief editor," strategist, or auditor of outputs. The most important skills will be critical thinking, flexibility, empathy, and the ability to see things through to completion. As AI becomes increasingly proficient in technical skills, the value of human "soft skills" is paradoxically skyrocketing (as confirmed by data from the World Economic Forum).
- Which professions will survive and which are at risk?
Due to the so-called Moravec's paradox (for machines, logical thinking is easier than navigation and movement in the physical world), manual and socially demanding professions as a whole—ranging from plumbers to nurses to teachers and psychologists—are currently much less at risk. Conversely, junior knowledge positions and some "white-collar" jobs (e.g., routine copywriters, translators of corporate texts, or junior programmers) are more exposed to the automation of routine tasks.
- How to start using AI tomorrow?
Become a "Centaur." Let AI handle the tedious, invisible routines—meeting notes, emails, data formatting. Invest the time saved into thinking and strategy. And above all: make AI your analytical opponent (Socrates). Before you go to a meeting, let it critique your ideas.
💡 Example prompt for opposition:
"Act as a ruthless analyst. I present to you my proposal [fill in the topic]. Your task is to identify the 3 biggest risks or weaknesses and ask me 2 tough questions that will force me to improve the proposal. Here is my text: [insert text]"
(But remember to prioritise security and do not upload sensitive corporate data to public tools!)
- If I were starting from scratch today?
I would take the path of the "radical generalist." Being a narrowly focused coder will soon no longer be sufficient. The future belongs to those who can connect the dots across disciplines—such as technology, business, and law. Deep but narrow expertise will increasingly be provided on demand by AI systems. Be an architect who is not afraid to take responsibility for the outcome.
What’s your take on this? How do you use AI in your work, and do you feel secure in your field? Share your thoughts in the comments! 👇
