Hello to all technology enthusiasts! đŸ€–

You often ask me about AI, especially regarding the enormous sums of money swirling around it. Today, Ms Theerová from TV Nova asked me these questions (in the news today). Is this a new gold rush, or merely an inflated bubble? Let’s take a straightforward look at it.

Imagine AI as the construction of an entirely new city in the desert. It’s a massive and costly project, but everyone believes it will be the metropolis of the future.

đŸ—ïž 1. Who supplies the bricks? The recently announced partnership, where Nvidia intends to invest up to $100 billion in infrastructure for OpenAI, sounds incredible. For comparison, that’s roughly the entire annual budget of the Czech Republic!

It’s not as if Nvidia is handing OpenAI a suitcase full of cash. This is a strategic agreement: the largest manufacturer of "bricks and cranes" (chips and servers) has committed to supplying the "builder" (OpenAI) with materials to construct massive computational capacity. For Nvidia, this is excellent business – it secures a huge market and strengthens the entire AI ecosystem.

📈 2. How big is the construction site? The construction site is vast. The American AI market is already estimated to be worth tens to hundreds of billions of dollars. And the plans are even grander – some forecasts speak of a global market valued at nearly $5 trillion within ten years. That’s like planning not just one city, but an entirely new country.

đŸ€” 3. Will it all come crashing down? This is a key question, and the answer is not black and white.

Arguments that the construction stands on solid foundations:

  • Real-world applications: The city already has its first functional buildings. Companies in healthcare, finance, and logistics are already using AI, thereby increasing their productivity.

  • Growing revenues: OpenAI is already generating billions in revenue, even while spending heavily on operations and research.

  • Economic support: The construction of the city creates demand for energy, data, and buildings, leading to the emergence of new startups.

Arguments that the foundations may tremble:

  • Enormous costs: Operating AI models is extremely expensive – it consumes vast amounts of energy, money, and human resources. Sustainability is key.

  • Exaggerated expectations: Land prices (company valuations) are astronomical. The question remains whether future profits will meet these expectations.

  • Risks: Anything could complicate the construction – new competition, regulations, or ethical issues.

🌟 4. Who is the chief architect? OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, has become a star remarkably quickly. However, he was not a newcomer. He was already a well-known figure (as the president of the startup incubator Y Combinator) and had excellent connections. When he took over OpenAI in 2019 and introduced ChatGPT to the world in November 2022, it was like opening the first grand building to the public. Within 2-3 years, he has become one of the most influential people in technology.

In conclusion? We are not merely witnessing an empty bubble. A real city is being built, one that is already changing the world. The question remains how quickly and sustainably it will grow and whether some of its parts are built on overly optimistic foundations.
