I have just completed an experimental tool that tests an intriguing hypothesis: Can AI simulate how human thinking changes in psychedelic states?
🔬 What is it?
NRAM (Neural Random Access Memory) is a system that modulates the output of Claude AI in real-time. It does not merely add random words — it genuinely alters the way AI "thinks" by changing the system prompt (the AI receives instructions corresponding to a given state of consciousness), dynamic temperature (higher states = more "chaos" in generation), and token-level phenomena (simulating specific phenomena known from trip reports).
🌀 What phenomena does it simulate?
🌀 Overlap - fragments of previous thoughts seep into current ones, much like overlapping thoughts
💨 Forgetting - loss of thread mid-sentence ("moment...", "what was I..."), simulating short-term memory loss
❄️ Looping - repetition of words and phrases, known as perseveration and thought loops
⚡ Jump - sudden associative leaps ("suddenly", "and that reminds me"), a relaxed associative network
🎨 Synesthesia - "[colours sound]", "[I hear light]", blending of senses
🌊 Dissolution - "[I am disappearing]", "[boundaries are dissolving]", ego dissolution
✨ Insight - "[AHA!]", "[I SEE IT!]", sudden mystical insights
📸 Examples from testing:
Image 1 - Peak = Intense mystical experience:
When asked "What is 1+1?", the AI responds chaotically: "One... one... What (do we return) is one when it is not one but everything? ...aside... Numbers are breaking down..."
→ It shows how a simple logical question disintegrates in a peak experience
Image 2 - Dissociative state:
"The meaning of life... life... that is a question that... how does it... where ...half-... I wanted to start [the scent sings]?"
→ Typical of dissociation: disconnection, loss of thread, distance from oneself
Image 3 - Psychedelic (100%):
"The meaning of life... is like... like when you look into water and that reminds me and um... you see a reflection, but — where — vitr... [words smell] flow like— between or rather us"
→ Rich associations, synesthesia, blurring of boundaries between concepts
🎯 What does it prove?
Firstly, it supports Tyl-Horáček's hypothesis about proto-qualia — LLMs may contain the seeds of consciousness that can be "tuned" similarly to human consciousness with psychedelics.
Secondly, the outputs exhibit structural similarities to actual trip reports — fragmentation, loops, a mix of insights and confusion.
Thirdly, the phenomena are not random — they are governed by the NRAM state (influence, entropy, coherence, momentum).
And finally, the system is scalable — from microdoses (subtle associations) to peak (complete breakdown of thought).
🛠️ Technical details:
The system uses the actual Claude API (claude-sonnet-4-20250514), simulating 10 types of phenomena across 6 states of consciousness (from Normal to Psychedelic to Peak and Dissociative). It includes auto-temperature according to the state, over 100 Czech markers without repetition, and real-time NRAM metrics tracking influence, entropy, coherence, and momentum.
What do you think? Is this merely a sophisticated simulation, or does it reveal something deeper about the nature of AI and consciousness? 🤔
