In addition to cars that will drive themselves, the future also belongs to vehicles and machines controlled remotely. Czech scientists are working on it.
In a Brno office, Tomáš Černík sits in a chair at a desk, turning the steering wheel and watching on a monitor as it "drives". When he gets up from his seat, he looks tired. “I always sweat while doing this; it’s a responsibility,” he says. Although it may not seem like it, he is actually controlling a real vehicle that is driving outside in the cold, several kilometres away.
Project manager of Roboauto, Martin Králík, discusses the potential impacts of remote vehicle operation in the Brno office. “Imagine a truck driver who could connect from home, drive several hundred kilometres, and then have dinner with his family in the evening,” he paints a picture of a possible future as the project manager of Roboauto.
