Artificial Intelligence Has Learned to Tell Jokes. However, They Are Truly Awful Groaners!

Janelle Shane is reportedly one of the world's leading experts on artificial intelligence. She is currently trying to teach machines to joke. How is she doing? Judge for yourself:
“What is brown and sticky? A potato in space.”
“How do you call a tea fart? A dry play challenge.”

I must say, when I started with NLP, I tried the same thing. There is a massive database of English jokes, and it practically begged for an attempt to generate text based on jokes rather than, say, poetry. Back then, I was not familiar with tricks like attention, and word2vec was still in its infancy. Just like here, my AI-generated results did not seem particularly funny. It’s almost a challenge to try it again with today’s knowledge and do better. Or how about creating an AI detector for funniness?
