For decades, each generation of computer chips has been faster and more energy-efficient as their most fundamental building blocks, known as transistors, have shrunk. Recently, the pace of these improvements has slowed, but IBM announced on Thursday that they have at least one more generational leap ready. IBM unveiled its 2-nanometre chip manufacturing technology. This technology could be up to 45% faster than the common 7-nanometre chips found in many of today’s laptops and phones, and up to 75% more energy-efficient, the company stated.
