How do people really use ChatGPT? A new study reveals surprising findings.
Did you know that 10% of the adult population worldwide is using ChatGPT? 🌍 The new study uncovers fascinating data on how and why this tool has become a part of our lives. We've selected the most interesting insights for you! 👇
1️⃣ It's not just about work! 🏠 Surprisingly, up to 73% of all conversations with ChatGPT do not pertain to work. People are increasingly using it in their personal lives—for planning, education, or seeking advice.
2️⃣ We write differently than you might think ✍️ The "Writing" category is indeed vast, but roughly two-thirds of requests are not about having the AI write something for us. On the contrary, we primarily want it to enhance, translate, summarise, or critique our own text! That’s precisely why we at AI Studio designed features so that the AI is not just an author, but primarily your personal editor and critic, helping to improve your text.
3️⃣ We are shifting from "Do" to "Ask" 🤔 While initially we wanted the AI to mainly "do" tasks, the trend is now reversing. We are increasingly "asking"—seeking information and support for our decision-making. This trend confirms that we want AI as a partner for advice. This principle underpins our Hyperspace, where you can create AI personalities specialised in consultancy.
4️⃣ Goodbye, gender gap! 👋 While at the beginning men constituted up to 80% of users, today the ratio is nearly balanced. By June 2025, female users with typically female names even slightly outnumbered their male counterparts.
5️⃣ A next-generation search engine? 🔍 The "Information Search" category is skyrocketing. In just one year, its share has doubled from 14% to 24%, indicating that for many people, ChatGPT is becoming a direct replacement for traditional web search engines.
6️⃣ Users in poorer countries are catching up 📈 The largest growth in user numbers over the past year has been recorded in countries with lower and middle incomes. It appears that technology is becoming increasingly accessible to the entire world.
What surprised (and pleased) me most about the study?
Honestly, several things. For instance, that female users now slightly outnumber men, or how massively AI has transitioned into private life. And above all—responses in "Ask" mode have proven to be more satisfying than tasks in "Do" mode. This shows that we perceive AI more as a clever advisor than as a servant. I was also very pleased to discover that the majority (about two-thirds) of work with text is not about having AI write for us, but about helping us improve our own text. This is great news for all creators!
Which of these 6 trends surprised you the most? Let me know in the comments!
