The AI project Debater from IBM recently faced off against a world debate champion. This time, the human emerged victorious. However, the artificial intelligence pleasantly surprised everyone in the debate competition.
In debate competitions, two participants stand against each other. One must argue "for" a particular statement, while the other counters it with opposing arguments. The winner is the one who can persuade more people in the voting.
From the outset, Project Debater spoke directly to the point and presented arguments supporting the given topic in a clear manner.
According to the article, the human opponent's speech—Harishe Natarajan—was denser and more specific, and particularly in the second speech (where both sides must counter the arguments presented by their opponent in the first speech), it was evident that Natarajan responded more to the specific arguments made by the artificial intelligence, while Project Debater tended to continue with its own line of argumentation.
Interestingly for the AI, in the supplementary voting on "who enriched your knowledge more," Project Debater performed significantly better.
